Updating mpd database

The advantage at the end is maybe more for us with an enormous music library, imagine more than 50.000 songs or more.I can assure you if you have 100.000 tracks forget all the players like Banshee etc. So, if you have less, could be you are just happy with what you have and for me, MOC is really good but without all that features MPD and a client of your choice can give me, tagging, searching, libraries, Last FM etc. MPD is for power users regarding music I would say. The beauty of running it in the background is that it can run even without X. with MOC, but there is the problem, when I use the "lousy" search feature and want to import big directories into the playlist MOC won't be fast, with MPD it is a one "click" on whatever and regardless of the size of the music directory, immediately it will pull all the music to a playlist. No heavy loads and waiting, the CPU and RAM stands normal. * Neither the name of the author nor the names of his contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission. * Redistributions in binary form must reproduce the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer in the documentation and/or other materials provided with the distribution. The more complete (and complicated) pages from which I got the information are referenced and can provide other approaches.I make the assumption everywhere that your environment is relatively simple.

August 2015: this page is almost 2 years old, and there are now much simpler ways to set up an MPD/upmpdcli-based Raspberry Pi music player: download one of the dedicated distributions (Moode Audio, Volumio, Rune Audio, Archphile, Pi Music Box and others), copy it to an SD card, boot up the Pi and be up and running.

Setting up MPD is not as simple as other music players. If you have your music in multiple folders then I cannot help you.

To see MPD in action, first we have to install MPD – and a client. MPD was designed with just one music root directory in mind. The ‘–create-db’ argument will read the contents of the root music directory and add the Music files to a text database.
